Salsa Dance for Kids

Who loves to dance?  I dooooo, or as I say in my preschool circle time:  Yooooo (Spanish for Me or I).  When my friend Minako-san, a KiDo Kids Yoga and Yogic Arts teacher from Tokyo (and my translator when I am teaching in her town) was visiting me in California at my home, she video taped this short Salsa Dance sequence.

I really hope you try it out and dance with your kids!  Let me know how it goes by leaving a comment below.

KiDo Kids Magazine coming in 17 days

Dear Friend,

I’ve been working on this really fun project called KiDo Kids Magazine. So far I have created about 12 pages of categories to dazzle and wow you and your little ones…it’s going to be a fun year.  One of my favorite things to do is create new activities and games around yoga and movement.  I can just imagine you with your kids playing these games, doing these activities and laughing your heads off.  I’m smiling now.

I will launch the first issue April 1st, no we’re not fools…or are we?  That’s just 17 days away.  Wanna take a peek?

Here it is:  It’s the page which introduces Geography and Humanities Studies to children.  We’ll have lots of extras like this.  Remember, I was a homeschool Mom for 11 years, so how can I hold back?!  The good thing is, the magazine will be super affordable, especially if you subscribe for the whole year.   You’ll see.

I guess I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but my great teacher, Alex Mandossian said:  “Sloppy Success is better than Perfect Mediocrity”.

So I keep creating and now counting down the days…

As we say in YogaRhymes:  Rocketships Ready, Hold on Tight, 4, 3, 2, 1…Blast Off in Flight!  (watch me do it here on our KiDo Kids Yoga YouTube Channel ).

Until next time…Keep Playing with Your Kids,

Heather Kamala

A New Years Yoga Sequence for Young Children

More about shantigeneration

“What a caterpillar calls the end, the rest of the world calls a butterfly.” ~ Lao Tsu

Children's Yoga Sequence

The New Year always reminds me of new beginnings. I tell my students that it is like a blank piece of paper at the art table. The possibilities are endless for what you can create. As I plan my classes for the week I often turn to nature and in this time ofchange from one year to the next I think of the butterfly.

Butterfly Yoga Class
First, ask your students to tell you what they already know about the journey from egg to butterfly. Give them all an opportunity to share their thoughts on the subject and ask them questions to fill in the details and to spark their curiosity. Then ask them if they would like to feel what that journey is like in their bodies. You will be answered with a resounding, “Yes! I want to be a butterfly! Me too! I want to be a red one!”

Egg (child’s pose) -The egg sticks to a leaf and is covered with a coating of warm wax to keep it from drying out. This image and pose can feel Continue reading

Intimate Conversation with Mother Earth

by  T h i c h   N h a t  H a n h
One of the best known and most respected Zen masters in the world today, poet, and peace and human rights activist, Thich Nhat Hanh (called Thây by his students) has led an extraordinary life. Born in central Vietnam in 1926 he joined the monkshood at the age of sixteen. The Vietnam War confronted the monasteries with the question of whether to adhere to the contemplative life and remain meditating in the monasteries, or to help the villagers suffering under bombings and other devastation of the war. Nhat Hanh was one of those who chose to do both, helping to found the “engaged Buddhism” movement. His life has since been dedicated to the work of inner transformation for the benefit of individuals and society.

Dear Mother, I bow down before you with utmost respect and the clear awareness that you are present in me and that I am a part of you. You gave birth to me and provided me with everything I needed for my nourishment. You gave me air to breathe, water to drink, food to eat, and medicinal herbs to heal me when I was sick. Because you gave birth to me once, I know that you will continue to give birth to me again and again in the future. That is why I can never die. Each time I manifest, I am fresh and new; and each time I return, you receive and embrace me with great compassion. You are the great Earth, you are Terra, you are Gaia, you are this beautiful blue planet. You are the Earth Refreshing Bodhisattva1 Continue reading
